Smith, ‘Red’ (1905-1982)

US journalist. Recruited from the Philadelphia Record in 1945 by the New York Herald Tribune, he was a widely syndicated sports columnist with a national reputation, known for his humour and command of language. When this newspaper folded in 1967, he found a new base at the New York Times.

He was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He won many awards, including a 1976 Pulitzer Prize.
