Smith, Carleton Sprague (1905–1994)

US critic, musicologist, and flautist. He studied at Harvard University and in Vienna. After a year as critic to the Boston Transcript, he became chief librarian of the music section of the New York Public Library and lecturer in history of music at Columbia University. In 1938 he became president of the American Musicological Society.
