Smith, Fred(erick Wallace) (1944– )

US entrepreneur. Born in Marks, Mississippi, he conceived the idea of an overnight intercity delivery service for small packages. He founded the Memphis-based delivery company Federal Express in 1971, creating a computer-directed network of aeroplanes and lorries and inventing an innovative routing system that, together with aggressive advertising, made it one of the USA's fastest growing companies. The company was renamed FedEx Corp. in 2000 and Smith remains chairman, president, and chief executive officer. He was named as Chief Executive magazine's ‘CEO of the Year’ in 2004 and ‘Person of the Year’ by the French-American Chamber of Commerce in 2006.
