Smith, George (1831-1895)

British brickmaker and philanthropist. He discovered clay at Coalville, England, and organized a large brickmaking business there. An earnest social worker, he wrote The Cry of the Children (1871), which resulted in legislation controlling the employment of child-workers in brickfields. He later devoted his attention to improving the condition of gypsy children. Smith was born near Tunstall, Staffordshire, England.
