Smith, Jennifer (1945– )

British soprano. She made her debut in Don Carlos at Lisbon in 1968, and then studied further with Pierre Bernac in London. She sang Mozart's Countess with Welsh National Opera (1979), and was Alphise in the first staged performance of Rameau's Les Boréades (Aix-en-Provence, 1982). She performed Amintas in Il re Pastore at Lisbon (1987), and sang Cybele in the first US performance of Lully's Atys (New York 1988, with Les Arts Florissants). She sang the Queen of the Night in Roger Norrington's ‘Mozart Experience’ (London 1989), and the title role in Iphigénie en Tauride with the English Bach Festival (the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, 1992). She was much admired for her recordings of operas by Rameau, Purcell, Mondonville (Titon et L'aurore), and Marais (Alcyone).
