Smith, Michael John (1945-1986)

US astronaut. He served as commander in NASA's Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory before being assigned as pilot of the space shuttle Challenger flight that exploded soon after its launch in January 1986. Smith and his six fellow crew members were killed in the explosion. He was selected as an astronaut in 1980.
