Smith, Robert (1757–1842)

US secretary of the navy and secretary of state. He served as Thomas Jefferson's secretary of the navy 1801–09. He maintained a blockading squadron against the Barbary pirates with very limited funds. He was secretary of state 1809–11 but he feuded with President James Madison and was forced to resign.

He was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Smith, Robert (1689–1768)

British mathematician. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, becoming Plumian Professor of astronomy in 1716. He published his Opticks in 1738 and Harmonics in 1760. Smith was born near Gainsborough, England.

Smith, Robert (c. 1648–1675)

English composer. He was a chorister at the Chapel Royal in London under Cooke and became Musician in Ordinary to the King on the death of Pelham Humfrey in 1674.
