Smith, Winthrop

Smith, Winthrop (Hiram, Jr) (1949– )

US financial services executive. In 1974 he joined Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith (which became Merrill Lynch & Co. ) as an investment banker. He rose through a series of management positions to become an executive vice-chairman and the chairman of Merrill Lynch International before leaving the bank in 2002 to pursue private equity investment interests.

He was born in New York City. He graduated from Amherst in 1971 and gained a graduate business degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1974.
