Smith, Andrew David (1951– )

British Labour politician, secretary of state for work and pensions 2002–04. He became MP for Oxford East in 1987. Between 1997 and 1999, as minister for employment, he was in charge of one of the key initiatives of the first term of Tony Blair's Labour government, the ‘Welfare to Work’ scheme. He entered the cabinet in 1999 as chief secretary to the Treasury.

Born in Wokingham, Smith studied at Oxford University and stayed on in the city as a local councillor, from 1976.
