Smithers

Town in west-central British Columbia, Canada, on the Bulkley River, 210 km/130 mi east of Prince Rupert; population (1991) 5,000. It is a silver- and lead-mining centre and railway division point. Timber, diverse agriculture, and tourism are also important.

In Babine homelands, it developed with the arrival of the railway in 1913.
