Smithers, Don (Le Roy) (1933– )

US music historian and trumpeter. He was active as trumpeter and cornet player in various early music groups, including the New York Pro Musica, the Leonhardt Consort, Concentus Musicus Wien, and the Early Music Consort of London. His books include The Music and History of the Baroque Trumpet Before 1721 (1973).

He studied at Columbia University, New York, and at Oxford. He has taught at Syracuse University, New York, 1966–75, and at the Hague, Netherlands.
