smooth muscle

Involuntary muscle capable of slow contraction over a period of time. It is present in hollow organs, such as the intestines, stomach, bladder, and blood vessels. Its presence in the wall of the alimentary canal allows slow rhythmic movements known as peristalsis, which cause food to be mixed and forced along the gut. Smooth muscle has a microscopic structure distinct from other forms.
