Sneek

Town in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, 21 km/13 mi southwest of Leeuwarden; population (2006 est) 33,000. It has a butter and cheese market and tobacco manufacturing. Formerly an important shipbuilding centre, Sneek is now a centre of the booming pleasure-boat industry. Large regattas are held each August on the Sneekermeer to the east of the town.
