Sneem

Village in County Kerry, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 672. Situated 26 km/16 mi west of Kenmare, Sneem is a popular beauty spot and a centre for tourists and artists. The Parknasilla estate 3 km/2 mi to the south of Sneem has attractive gardens and grounds.

Staigue Fort 2 km/1 mi north of Sneem is a stone ring fort 27 m/90 ft across with walls 4 m/13 ft thick and a set of stairways on the inside.

Sneem's Italianate Catholic church built in 1865 has a memorial window to the poet Aubrey De Vere. Michael Walsh (1828–1866), the ‘Father O'Flynn’ of a ballad by Alfred Perceval Graves, was parish priest here. Cearbhall O'Dalaigh, president of Ireland 1974–76, is buried in Sneem and there is a sculpture to his memory by Vivienne Roche in the square.
