Snowy River

River in southeast New South Wales and Victoria, Australia. The Snowy River rises in the Snowy Mountains, near the northeast slope of Mount Kosciusko, then crosses the border into Victoria and flows south to reach the sea at Bass Strait. The headwaters of the Snowy River are now diverted to flow west and north into the upper Murray and Tumut rivers, as part of a project by the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Authority to generate hydroelectric power and provide irrigation.

The Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Authority project is one of the world's most complex hydroelectric schemes; it consists of 16 dams, 7 power stations, and 225 km/140 mi of tunnels and aqueducts.
