Snyder

City and administrative headquarters of Scurry County, north-central Texas, 128 km/79 mi southeast of Lubbock; population (1990) 12,200. Sheep, pigs, cattle, and cotton are raised in the area. The opening of the large Canyon Reef oilfield caused a boom after 1950.

Starting out as a trading post built by Pete Snyder in 1876, the community developed into a cattle town. Western Texas College (1969) is here.
