Socrates, José

    0.04 sec.

Socrates, José (1957- )

Portuguese Socialist Party politician, prime minister from 2005. A former environment minister 1999-2002, he was elected leader of the Socialist Party in September 2004, while in opposition, and led it to victory in the February 2005 general election. He pledged to kick-start Portugal's ailing economy, which had a high unemployment rate due in part to European Union (EU) subsidies and foreign investment were being diverted to eastern Europe.

Born in the Vila Real district, he trained and worked as a civil engineer before being elected to parliament for the Socialist Party in 1987.
