Sumba

Island in Nusa Tenggara (Lesser Sunda Islands), Indonesia, 48 km/30 mi south of Flores Island; area 10,350 sq km/3,996 sq mi; population (1990) 400,000. The island's economy is based on shifting maize cultivation, hunting, fishing, and gathering, with some stock raising and cotton growing. Ikat cloth is exported. It was formerly an important source of sandalwood.

The inhabitants are non-Malay Sumbanese, animist and Christian in religion.
