Sofonisba, La

Opera by Antonio Caldara (libretto by Francesco Silvani), produced at the Teatro San Giovanni Crisostomo, Venice, in December 1708. In the story, Siface, King of Numidia, is captured by the Romans. His wife Sophonisba joins him, but commits suicide rather than face the humiliation of her chains.

Opera by Gluck (libretto ditto, with airs from different libretti by Metastasio), produced at the Teatro Regio Ducal, Milan, on 18 January 1744.

In ogni caso, nel ripercorrere le fasi della sua riflessione sul pensiero aristotelico a proposito dell'epica, e necessario tener presente che gia a partire dalla composizione della Sofonisba, la prima tragedia regolare italiana, e cioe dal 1515 (e dunque molti anni prima chela questione del poema si affacciasse), Trissino si era posto il problema di una poetica piu consona con i principi aristotelici.
