Soglo, Nicéphore (1934–2005)

Benin politician, prime minister 1990–91 and president 1991–96. He first became prominent as inspector general of finances at the Benin finance ministry and as a governor of the International Monetary Fund. As leader of the Benin Renaissance Party, he was prime minister of a transitional national executive council after a civilian coup in 1990, and became president in a coalition government from 1991 to October 1996.

Soglo was born in Lomé, Togo, and educated at the Sorbonne in Paris.
