Sokoto

State in Nigeria, established 1976; capital Sokoto; area 102,500 sq km/39,565 sq mi; population (1991 est) 2,418,600. It was an Islamic Fula sultanate from the 16th century until occupied by the British in 1903.

Trading centre and capital of Sokoto state, northwestern Nigeria; population (2007 est) 601,900. It trades in cement, wood, leather, and textiles. The palace of the sultan of the Fula Sultanate and the Shehu Mosque are here.
