Solothurn

Capital of the Swiss canton of the same name, on the River Aar, 30 km/19 mi north of Bern; population (2000) 15,500. It is an important railway junction; industries include electrical engineering and watchmaking.

Solothurn stands on the site of the Roman fortress of Salodurum, and has a collection of old weaponry and armour.

Solothurn

Canton in northwest Switzerland; area 791 sq km/305 sq mi; population (1999 est) 243,900. The canton stretches from Basel to Bern and is traversed by the foothills of the Jura Mountains. It is largely agricultural, but also has shoe, paper, cement, textile, watch, and engineering industries.

The population is mainly German-speaking and Roman Catholic.
