solstice

Either of the days on which the Sun is farthest north or south of the celestial equator each year. In the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice, when the Sun is farthest north, occurs around 21 June and the winter solstice around 22 December.

Our summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is also the winter solstice for those in the Southern Hemisphere, and when the sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn the two solstices flip, marking our winter solstice and the Southern Hemisphere's summer solstice.
