Solway Firth

Inlet of the Irish Sea, formed by the estuaries of the rivers Eden and Esk, at the western end of the border between England and Scotland, separating Cumbria in England from Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. Solway Firth is in part the estuary of the River Esk, and in part an inlet of the Irish Sea.

At its mouth the firth is over 40 km/25 mi wide; at its narrowest point it is 3 km/2 mi wide. The tides ebb and flow with great rapidity, creating a bore (high wave moving up a narrow estuary, caused by the tide) of some 16 kph/10 mph. There are salmon fisheries.
