Somers, John, 1st Baron Somers of Evesham

Somers, John, 1st Baron Somers of Evesham (1651–1716)

English politician. He took part in the framing of the Declaration of Rights in 1689, and became William of Orange's most trusted minister. He was in turn solicitor-general, attorney-general, lord keeper of the Great Seal, and, in 1697, lord chancellor.

Somers was born in Claines, near Worcester, England. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford Univeristy. He was made Baron Somers in 1697. For most of Anne's reign he was out of favour but on the accession of George I he was made a privy councillor.
