Somerset County

County in north-central New Jersey, bounded to the northeast by the Passaic River; area 790 sq km/305 sq mi; population (1990) 240,300. Its capital is Somerville. The county has been largely agricultural in character, producing vegetables, grain, and poultry, but is now experiencing rapid suburbanization.

The north has affluent residential communities such as Bernardsville, Far Hills, and Basking Ridge, and is home to numerous corporate complexes.
