Sondheim, Stephen Joshua

Sondheim, Stephen Joshua (1930- )

US composer and lyricist. He wrote the lyrics for Bernstein's West Side Story (1957) and Styne's Gypsy (1959). Later he wrote both words and music for such shows as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Sweeny Todd (1979; Grammy Award), Sunday in the Park with George (1984; Pulitzer Prize for Drama), and Into the Woods (1987).

He won the Academy Award for best song for ‘Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)’ from the film Dick Tracy (1990), as well as several Tony Awards for his musical scores.

He studied at Williams College, Massachusetts, and with Milton Babbitt. Other shows for which he wrote words and music include A Little Night Music (1972), Pacific Overtures (1976), Assassins (1990), and Passion (1994). His musical Bounce (2003) was a collaboration with US director Hal Prince.
