Sondrio

Capital of Sondrio province in Lombardy region, northern Italy, on the River Adda, about 100 km/62 mi northeast of Milan; population (1991) 22,800. It is at the centre of the Valtellina; winter tourism is important in this area, though little developed in the town of Sondrio. Its service sector includes banking, commerce, administration, and haulage; textile production and cattle and pig breeding are important.
