MagnificatIn the New Testament, the song of praise sung by Mary, the mother of Jesus, on her visit to her cousin Elizabeth shortly after the Annunciation. It is used in the liturgy of some Christian churches in the form of a canticle based on text from St Luke's gospel 1:46–55 (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord ...’). It is sung at Roman Catholic vespers and Anglican evensong, either in plainsong or to a composer's setting, as in works by Monteverdi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Palestrina, and Vaughan Williams.
