Sonic Youth

US rock group formed in New York in 1981. Their use of detuned guitars, dissonance, and distortion, combined with a chilling melodic sense, made them one of the most influential bands of the decade. Their albums include Bad Moon Rising (1985), Daydream Nation (1988), Goo (1990), Dirty (1992), Washing Machine (1995), and A Thousand Leaves (1998).

Founder members of the group are Thurston Moore (1958– ) (guitar), Lee Ranaldo (1956– ) (guitar), and Kim Gordon (1953– ) (bass). Steve Shelley (1962– ) (drums) joined the band in 1985.
