Liston, Sonny (Charles) (1932–1970)

US boxer known for his great strength, heavy punching and very long reach (213 cm) who was world heavyweight champion between 1962 and 1964.

Career highlights

Professional career (1953–69)

fights: 54; wins: 50 (39 knockouts); draws: 0; defeats: 4

Born at Louisville, Kentucky, his early career was ruined by prison sentences, but in 54 contests covering 17 years he was beaten only four times, twice by Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali). He took the heavyweight championship from Floyd Patterson in 2 minutes 6 seconds at Chicago in 1962, defeating him the following year in a return bout in 2 minutes 10 seconds. In 1964 he was surprisingly beaten by Clay, refusing to come out of his corner in the 7th round, and in a return match the following year was mysteriously knocked out in one minute. He retired in 1969, but died a year later in highly suspicious circumstances.
