Sonoma

City in northwestern California, 26 km/16 mi southeast of Santa Rosa; population (1990) 8,100. It is a trade centre in an area that produces wine, dairy goods, and fruit. Its Buena Vista Vineyards have been well known since the 1850s.

Founded in 1835 on the site of the 1823 Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma, it was the seat of the short-lived Bear Flag (California) Republic (June–July 1846).
