Sopot

Seaside resort and spa in Gdańsk province, Poland, 11 km/7 mi north of Gdańsk; population (1990) 46,700.

Sopot developed as a fashionable bathing resort after 1823, but swimming is no longer advisable because of thousands of tonnes of pollutants spilled into the Gulf of Gdańsk by the River Vistula.
