Sopron

Town in Györ-Sopron county, Hungary, near the Austrian border between the Neusiedler See and the eastern Alps, 77 km/48 mi west of Györ; population (2001) 56,200. Wine, textiles, and chemicals are produced. One of the best-preserved historic towns in Hungary, it attracts tourists.

Originally a Celtic settlement, Sopron prospered in the Roman and medieval periods, and has remained a regional centre. It has 240 historic buildings and 115 historic monuments. The town was ceded to Austria as part of Bürgenland by the Treaty of Trianon 1920, but returned to Hungary after a plebiscite 1921.

There is a museum of mining.
