Sopwith, Thomas Octave Murdoch (1888–1989)

A Hawker Hurricane, photographed in 1943. This manoeuvrable fighter aircraft was first flown in 1935, and was used extensively by the RAF during the Battle of Britain in 1940. It had a single Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

English designer of the Sopwith Camel biplane, used in World War I, and joint developer of the Hawker Hurricane fighter plane used in World War II. He was knighted in 1953.
