Sorel

City in southern Québec, Canada, 72 km/44 mi northeast of Montréal, on the south bank of the St Lawrence River and the mouth of the Richelieu River; population (1991) 18,800. It is the commercial centre for a farming region, and grain is shipped from the port. It has industries producing steel, furniture, clothing, synthetic fibres, plastics, and concrete. Shipbuilding and titanium smelting are also important.
