Sorsogon

Province of southern Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 2,141 sq km/827 sq mi; population (1995) 592,000. The capital is Sorsogon. The province is traversed by a wooded volcanic mountain range, culminating in the Bulusan volcano (1,560 m/5,118 ft), interspersed with broad level farmlands. The province is subject to frequent violent typhoons. Hemp, coconuts, rice, and sweet potatoes are grown. The hot and cold springs near Bulusan are a centre for tourism.
