Sothern, Edward Askew

Sothern, Edward Askew (1826–1881)

English actor. As creator of the role of Dundreary in Our American Cousin 1858 by Tom Taylor (1817–1880), he acquired a cult following. In 1864 he played the title role in David Garrick. He continued to be a successful comic actor in both London and New York.

Three sons of his went on the stage, of whom Edward Sothern (1859–1933) was the most successful. For many years this son ran a Shakespeare repertory company in the USA with the US actor Julia Marlowe (1866–1950), his second wife.
