soubrette

In opera, a stock part given to a singer with a light soprano voice. The typical soubrette character is a servant, a young confidante, or a girl connected with the sub-plot.

Examples include Despina in Mozart's Così fan tutte and Aennchen in Weber's Der Freischütz. Occasionally the soubrette may assume a principal part, for example, Serpina in Pergolesi's La Serva padrona or Susanna in Mozart's Figaro.
