| Eruptions began on 18 July 1995, the first recorded eruption here. Activity of this stratovolcano became particularly severe in 1997, causing the loss of at least 10 lives, consuming the capital city, Plymouth, in lava flow, setting properties on fire, and forcing the British government to implement evacuation plans. |
