soul music

Style of vocal popular music developed in the 1960s by African Americans. It is an emotionally intense style of rhythm and blues that combines blues, gospel music, and jazz. Among its main singers are James Brown, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, and Otis Redding.
