Souliotis, Elena

    0.04 sec.

Souliotis, Elena (1943– )

Greek soprano. She studied in Milan, and made her debut at Naples in 1964, as Santuzza. She enjoyed wider fame in 1966, as Abigaille at La Scala, Milan, and Boito's Elena at the Lyric Opera, Chicago. In 1969 she made her New York and London debuts as Lady Macbeth (at the Metropolitan Opera House, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden). An apparent attempt to model herself on Callas led to an early vocal decline. From 1986 she appeared at Florence and Catania, in operas by Prokofiev (The Gambler), Puccini (Suor Angelica), and Mascagni (Guglielmo Ratcliff).
