source code

In computing, the original instructions written by computer programmers. Before these instructions can be understood by the computer, they must be processed by a compiler and turned into machine code.

If someone is trying to understand how a program works, examining the source code can prove to be very helpful. For this reason, most software companies guard the source code of their products very carefully. The source code of a Web page may also be viewed in order to find out how the page controls the flow of information.
