Souris

Town at the northeast end of Prince Edward Island, Canada, at the head of Colville Bay, 72 km/45 mi northeast of Charlottetown; population (1996 est) 1,300. It is a centre of Acadian culture, as well as a fishing and lobstering port and a commercial centre for northeastern Kings County.

It was settled by Acadians in 1748, and was overrun by mice in 1750, from which it gained its name (French ‘mice’). Scottish settlers arrived in 1772, English and Irish later in 1810. The railway, which is now closed, arrived in 1870. A ferry connects it with the Iles de la Madeleine, Québec.
