Sousa, John Philip (1854–1932)
US bandmaster and composer of marches. He wrote ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’ in 1897.
| After some years' experience as an orchestra violinist he became master of the US Marine Corps band in 1880; he became known as a brilliant bandmaster. He went on to form the Sousa Band in 1892 and toured internationally with this group until his death. In addition to about 140 stirring marches, including ‘The Washington Post’ (1889), ‘El capitan’ (1895), and ‘Imperial Edward’, he composed operettas, symphonic poems, suites, waltzes, and songs. |
