Sousse

Port and commercial centre in Tunisia, 160 km/100 mi south of Tunis; population (2004) 173,000. Industries include fishing, especially sardines, textile milling, olive oil manufacture, and food canning. It was founded by the Phoenicians and flourished under the Carthaginians and Romans. There are Roman ruins.
