Soustelle, Jacques (1912–1990)

French scholar and politician. He joined Charles de Gaulle in London, England, during World War II, and became minister for information in 1945. He was the leading Gaullist deputy, and was governor-general in Algeria. He played a leading part in the events of 1958 that led to the establishment of the Fifth Republic. He quarrelled with de Gaulle over Algerian policy, and was exiled 1962–68.

Soustelle was born in Montpellier, France. He was educated at the Ecole Normale Superieure. He was an expert on Aztec civilizations.
