South Amboy

City in east-central New Jersey, across the Raritan River from Perth Amboy; population (1990) 7,900. It has rich clay beds, which have provided an industrial base. In 1832 the Camden and Amboy Railroad made South Amboy a major shipping point.

Local munitions handling has led to two devastating explosions, in World War I and again in 1950.
