South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation

Organization established in 1985 by India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Maldives to cover agriculture, telecommunications, health, population, sports, art, and culture. In 1993 a preferential trade agreement was adopted to reduce tariffs on intra-regional trade. At the May 1997 summit it was agreed to establish a regional free trade zone by 2001. The secretary general of SARCC is Yadav Kant Siluql, of Nepal.
