South Bend

City and administrative headquarters of St Joseph County, north Indiana, USA, on the St Joseph River, 120 km/75 mi east of Chicago; population (2000) 107,800. It is the commercial and processing centre of an agricultural area. Industries include the manufacture of farm machinery, cars, aircraft equipment, and food products. The Roman Catholic University of Notre Dame (1842) and St Mary's College lie on the outskirts.

The community developed around a fur-trading post established in 1820, and was renamed in 1830 for the bend in the river. It was the home of the Studebaker car factory and the Singer sewing-machine cabinet works.
